The Collaboration Partnering with designer Vanessa Alexander, ENS Builders executed a comprehensive reimagining of a premier Malibu vacation home. The mission was to strip away a dated, "muddled" 1990s interior and replace it with a sophisticated, organic environment that prioritizes natural light and the Pacific Ocean horizon.
Structural Modernization The project required a total departure from the home's original dark woods and jewel-toned palette. Key structural and technical interventions included:
The Master Suite Overhaul: Nero led a significant structural change in the master bath, gutting "over-the-top" legacy elements to square out the room and create a singular, light-filled volume.
Material Innovation: We installed custom concrete flooring designed to feel warm and inviting rather than industrial, providing a durable, beach-ready foundation for high-traffic entertaining.
Artisan Finishes: To modernize the master suite’s fireplace, ENS Builders applied hand-troweled soft gray Venetian plaster, replacing ornate copper details with a clean, contemporary silhouette.
The Result By delineating "zones of activity" within the massive great room and paring back structural obstructions, ENS Builders helped transform a closed-off house into a fluid, indoor-outdoor retreat. The home now functions as a high-performance space for hosting 30+ guests while maintaining the intimate, "lived-in" soul of a private family camp.
"Aged pieces give soul to a light palette... we wanted it to feel like one huge room with lots of natural light." — Vanessa Alexander, Alexander Design
